The term astral debris, or the spiritual pollution in Indian tradition caused by the presence of disincarnate dark beings known as ghosts and ghouls and their presence causes dark heaviness in the astral spiritual surroundings/atmosphere. And that is the reason why rituals for dead ancestors are performed by the descendants of the family, so there may not be any heaviness of lower vibrations may not come upon the family members because of the presence of dead members in the immediate surroundings of the living family members. And Indian Text is known as Garuda Puran. These ghosts and discarnate spirits live up to 1000 thousand humans in these miserable conditions.

This massive drop in temperature takes place in the immediate presence of the discarnate spirits because they don't have enough positive karmas which bring brightness to the aura. Their subtle – nonphysical vibratory body is made up of lower black colour vibrations and that is the cause of coldness, secondly, these ghost and departed spirits are sad and depressed about their present situation, would prefer to get out of this miserable existence, prayers conducted on behalf of them, helps them attain redemption and the deliverance.

Such places should be turned into meditation and prayers centres. According to the Indian scriptures, these stuck souls need enough positive karmas to get rescued from their miserable conditions so they may make a journey towards the world of light. At such places, the sacred chants should be played continuously day and night, in low volume, as these sacred words begin to bring relief to their depressed situations. Group reading of the prayers can be done with the intention that the benefit of the recited litanies may come upon the consciousness of these tormented spirits.
Why Spirit of the Dead Person Needs Offering of Food And water.

According to Garuda Purana – Like the human fetus in the womb of the mother needs nourishment for its proper growth so, in the same way, the Spirit of the recently dead person will only take full and complete shape if only its living family members offer nourishment in the form of food and water. Initially, it takes on the form of a Pinda (A Ball), when the family member offers him a rice ball made from cooked rice, from then onward each day when this Rice Ball is offered then from Head to Toe the whole Astral/Subtle Body is formed. When this whole body comes into existence on Astral Plane then only, when further rice balls, when offered then the Spirit begins to eat ( since they have a body made of three subtle elements ie. fire, air and the akasha – space, so these Spirits only take in the essence of the offered through the sense of smell)
In literature and in the movies, the Spirits are shown with deformed bodies and scary faces, that is because these beings never received any nourishment from their living family members.
The same thing we also see during the Halloween festival when children dress up in scary costumes, this thing is particularly indicative of how the dead spirits are living or existing on other planes without any happiness.
In Tibet they have a very Tantric method of feeding the Spirits of the Dead – this is called Sky Burial. In this Crushed body parts are mixed with BARLEY flour and then given the shape of a ball and these balls are offered to vultures who hover around. It is believed that the spirit of the dead person/ancestors takes on the form of the vulture to partake the offering.
In India, the worship of the Ancestors takes place only after the Summer Solstice – when the Sun moves towards the South. According to the scriptures, the Abode of Lord Yama (Lord of Death) is in the direction of the South. Where his palace is on Astral Plane
There are many kinds of ghosts that may occur in dreams: some with flaming red hair, protruding teeth, and elephant tusks; some weeping and wailing, with running eyes and dripping noses; some in the form of friends and relatives who seem distraught and worried; and other forms as well. Some ghosts are parents and relatives of present and from the past lives, and for this reason, all living beings should be regarded as one's past parents and as future Buddhas. One who regards all beings in this way will never bother a single being, for he sees them all as his own parents. Ghosts who are seen in the dreams such as the ones mentioned above have done bad deeds and fallen into the state of woe. They have no one to help them by reciting Sutras or doing other similar meritorious acts. It is for this reason that there exists the Buddhist custom of reciting Sutras for the benefit of either the living or the dead. Those for whose sake the act is being done receive merit in this way and can be freed from the state of woe. If descendants of ghosts wish to read this Sutra for them but are unable to so for some reason, they may hire others to do the reading for him. In any case, the Sutra should be recited three or seven times ( or as many times only in odd numbers). Odd numbers carry within the Yang energy and the even numbers carry the Yin energy. Thus the reading of the Sutra in Yang number of times signals the breaking up of Karmic obstacles in hell.

The evil deeds done by the living beings bear corresponding results, yet even if one ought to fall into Evil Paths, his offences can be eradicated if his surviving family members cultivate holy causes for him. During the forty-nine days after the death, they should do many good deeds that can cause the dead soul to leave the Evil Paths. The benefits that accrue to the surviving family members are also unlimited.

Significance of Ancestor Worship

As we are products of our ancestors, worship is one way to express our gratitude towards them. It is also a way of helping them. Many of my ancestors may be suffering in the lower dimensions and giving them offerings of divine teachings and god's light could help them to raise to a higher spiritual level. Most ancestors need earth energies (panchmahabhutas – five basic elements -earth, water .fire.air and space )which they receive through offerings. If they can not receive this, they may attach themselves to their descendants in order to awaken them to their plight.

Spirits are human too, only they have no physical body, but their feelings and emotions are real. When the ancestors are unhappy they are stuck in the denseness of their emotions and can not move into the light as they don't see the light. In order to pacify them, descendants need to do divine service and inaugurate an altar for them.

One questions though, the guy who was shot and killed and did not want to move on until his killer was caught, does the spirit not have capability to show and or tell anyone, Christopher for example, where the killer was located? And another person also stated that one's grief can hold a spirt back from moving on, so release that "burden" of grief, as much as you can, so the spirit can move on. From what I understood.
