  1. Shushan Model.

Shushan made an excellent argument for NDEs being an external event that interacts with a person and manifests to the person through their culture but at the same time it can go against the grain of the culture.
The Howard Storm case is a perfect example of such an NDE.
Being a militant atheist why would his mind create an event it did not think possible? According to Storm as he was dying he thought this was the final goodbye and then nothing.
Why would Storm fantasize himself in a hellish realm?
The rescue from Hell via Jesus is a perfect example of culture at play as Jesus is a savior figure within Western Culture
Why would Storm fantasize a life review where he felt the pain he caused others. He said had it not been for the presence of beings of light the experience would have left him psychotic. That was also a corrective element by the experience
When it came to religion when Storm asked which religion was the " correct one" he was told the one that brings one closest to God. That certainly goes against the grain of Western Society and it goes against militant strains of atheism which tend to react to fundamentalism.
When Storm asked about the Bible he said what about the errors and contradictions. The beings of light said what about them, not that they don't exist. They then said he was reading the Bible in a way to make it irrelevant. That goes against the grain of Western religious thought to be sure and it certainly goes against militant atheism approach to  the Bible.
Storm upon having this experience had a complete change of life, he went from a Type A personality to a Type B. He went from being an Art Professor to a Clergymen. He stopped being a militant atheist.
