Could we not call it the soul?
Interesting that I am the same in terms of the "loosely Catholic upbringing". I now better understand having grown children and having devoted more energy to their religious upbringing early in their lives. I myself just seem to know that there is a God and a soul. The evidence seems to be overwhelming to myself. Just because the science of man is not up to the task is no deterrent to me. They can't even explain gravity or electricity. Why waste time debating the question anyway? To each his own.

Beautiful!!! My journey of learning about the afterlife seemed to begin much in the same way as yours. Through my process of grieving for my mothers unexpected passing, I questioned "what is heaven" and "will we be together again?" Although my mom was deeply religious later in life, I was the "scientist", I guess, and never thought much into this. So when cupboards opened, lights flickered, and my home phone rang showing caller ID from my house, I decided to meet with a local medium. It just opened the floodgates of believing with ABSOLUTE certainty, it is real!!! The peace and comfort of "just knowing" this. It then led me to you as I needed to learn and know more about spirituality. I have been a night nurse working in a geriatric setting for many years and I have been with many, many people and their families when they pass. Through my experiences and talking to loved ones about yours, as well, puts me with them and being there "for" them like I never had been in the past. Thank you for these awesome interviews you post. 🙂

Heard that they measured people's weight immediately before death and immediately after death and found a difference of one gram. They concluded with was the weight of the soul and spirit.
